We bought our first Pieds from Syd Smith and we also got some for Jack Smith after Syd had pass away, We also bought quite a few from Amaroo Aviaries (Mark) who we have working in with closely at one times. We are now working on what we concider our own bloodline of pieds.

Fallow is also know as Dominant Edged which gives a scolloping to the back and flight feathers and changes the feather structure which makes colours in the bird carrying the gene more intense in colour

JUST SHEDDING SOME LIGHT ONTO COLOURS

The Indian Ringneck Parrot most probably does not need a big introduction because next to Budgies, Lovebirds and Quarrions. This beautiful Asiatic parrot with its luxuriant green colour. With the male having a beautiful black and pink collar (ring) and long slender tail with its green and yellow and the eye black and the coral red beak. The Female is the same colour as the male as juveniles. But between 2 1/2 to 3 years when the male obtains his adult neck ring that the difference is obvious. This species has several mutations available. The most common is the Lutino. A truly beautiful colour of "Rich" yellow and with red eye and red beak. The male has a white and pink collar. This mutation is sex-linked recessive that means only males can be split to this colour example Lutino Male over a Green Hen. All Green young will be males that are split Lutino and all Lutinos will be Hens. But when you mate a Green Male to a Lutino Hen all the young are Green and all the cocks are split Lutino, but the Hens are only green.

The next readily available colour is the Blue Mutation. The Blue is a most striking colour. The blue, a deep powder blue. The male has a black and white collar. A most impressive bird with a blue head and body, black and white neck ring and a red beak. This mutation is recessive which means both male and female can be split for this colour. For example you can have a lutino hen split to blue or a Green Hen split to Blue. As well as cockbirds being split for blue and by adding the lutino and blue together you eventually obtain Albinos.

The Albino is a white coloured bird with red eyes and red beak and with adult males, if you look very very hard you can see a very faint collar. Just to go to show how much fun mutations are if you mate an Albino Cock to a Green Hen, the young can be sexed in the nest. All the Green birds are cocks that are split Blue split Lutino. Yes double splits and all the Lutinos are hens that are split to Blue.

The next colour to turn up was the Grey-Green and Grey with the Grey-Green being a kaki Green colour with red beak and dark eyes. The cocks' neckring being black and pink same as the normal green. The Grey is a lovely shade of Grey. Both Grey and Grey-Green are dominant by inheritance and they both have single and double factors in them. For example SF x Normal = 50% SF, 50% Normal, DF x Normal = 100% SF. DF x DF = 100% DF.

I first came across SF and DF some 10 years ago in black bodied Zebra Finches.  Some other mutations that are being worked on are pieds, Cinnamons, Black Eyed Yellows and now Yellow Headed Greens and White Headed Blues, generically termed Clear Heads have been imported into Australia. Legally by the Judd syndicate in mid 1995 so hopefully these birds in 4 or 5 years time will start to become available. To the budding Ringneck Breeder and in the not too distant future the colour blending of different colours. We may have Clear Headed Lutinos, Clear Headed Cinnamons, Clear Headed Greys and Grey-Greens but there is a lot of work to be done to get to this stage and in closing with this an array of colours this Bird truly earns the name of the Asiatic Rainbow.
